I found a good solution to this with a free software named Secret Disk. It is not a normal encrypt or decrypt software which may consumes a great deal of time if you have numerous private files to protect. It is much better as it creates a Secret Disk or drive on your PC which may be locked and unlocked with a password.  Moreover, when locked it is invisible in the Windows system.

Secret Disk will only appear when you open the application with the right password. In the program’s settings you can choose to have Secret Disk to notify you if there are failed attempts at accessing the hidden drive which may be valuable information to you as well.

In case of power failure or Windows failure, secret disk will be locked on till the next system boot. This will be done automatically as secret disk information are kept in memory and if memory fails secret disk will not be restored on next system logon. Secret Disk can also be automatically locked if you away from your PC (screensaver is running) or when you press emergency F8 button. This adds maximum protection for your files located on the disk.

Secret Disk latest version is v1.25 released on 19 Nov 2009 and is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 with multi languages supports.
